Music has always been a significant part of my life, particularly singing. During the 10 years that I lived in France, I co-founded a choir and later a thriving music theatre company so I could get my singing fix. When we moved back to the UK in 2018 and settled in Sevenoaks, finding a new musical community was a priority!
Initially this proved challenging; it seemed there were only only formal choral groups or large national franchises, neither of which appealed to me.
In 2021, after the Covid restrictions had been lifted, I stumbled across a poster for a choir I’d not heard of. I rushed along and, from the moment I walked into that first rehearsal, the warmth & friendliness of the community was palpable. Just four weeks later, I found myself on stage performing alongside my new choir friends!
I connected instantly to the choir’s aims & ethos. I love the variety of genres and unique arrangements of the songs we tackle! That we also raise money for charities is the icing on the cake!
Our choir leader, Philly is masterful in making singing accessible & fun as well as pulling a great sound from us. Thanks to her we are having a go at increasingly complex numbers as we gain experience and confidence.
I’ve taken an increasingly active role in the choir since I joined. I’m a Committee member and, drawing on my experience of staging full-scale musicals, I contribute to the Events team, helping organise concerts and performances. I rarely do things half-heartedly, so getting more involved & giving something back in support of the choir feels good.
For me, Sevenoaks Sings is nothing short of a gift and a privilege.
